Lawrence Michaelis, MD
Lawrence Michaelis, MD is the Chairman of the Board of VIRxSYS, and currently serves as the Company’s Interim President and CEO. Dr. Michaelis has served on the board of VIRxSYS since 2003 and as its Chairman since 2004. He attended Indiana University Medical School and trained in General, Thoracic, and Cardiovascular Surgery at the University of Virginia, where he also earned a Master's Degree in Surgical Physiology. After four years as Senior Surgeon at the National Heart and Lung Institute of the NIH, he became the first Chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Northwestern University Medical School (NUMS) and at Northwestern Memorial Hospital (NMH) in Chicago. Dr. Michaelis served as Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President of Medical Affairs at NMH and as an Associate Dean of NUMS; as Vice President of the Northwestern Medical Faculty Foundation; and as President of Northwestern Healthcare Corporation. In addition, he is a member of a number of prominent medical and surgical associations in which he has served in a wide variety of roles. He has taught healthcare economic related courses at Northwestern’s Kellogg School of Management and at the International Bank of Asia in Hong Kong. He remains Emeritus Professor of Surgery at Northwestern and is active in several other health related companies as board member/senior advisor He has authored more than 130 peer-reviewed journal articles.
